SMP building new Cottondale manufacturing plant
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Work began this week at the Cedar Cove Technology Park in Cottondale to make space for a new SMP parts facility projected to create nearly 650 jobs, Birmingham Business Journal reported.
Construction is set to begin on the 700,000-square-foot, $154 million factory this summe r, which will provide automotive parts including bumpers, interior and exterior door panels for Mercedes-Benz U.S. International in Vance. The facility will also house painting, assembly, injection molding and laminating operations. The plant is expected to come online in 2018.
SMP, or Samvardhana Motherson Peguform Automotive Systems Alabama Inc., has set up a temporary office in Northport, according to the Tuscaloosa News.
